I am deeply saddened by the passing into eternal rest of my grandfather, Sahibzada Fazil Latif, grandson of the first martyr of Ahmadiyya Islam - Sahibzada Abdul Latif of Khost, Afghanistan. I would refer to him as 'Papa'.
Papa was a very soft-spoken and kind-hearted soul. He always taught me the virtue of tolerance towards others, and was a lover of charity. He loved to donate to various charities and hospitals, and I found out just recently that long ago he quietly supported many people financially (who weren't his relatives) and then never told anyone about it. He would say that we should give money to the needy not because we feel we're doing them a favour, but because without them we cannot achieve material success.
He was independent from a young age, having moved out of his parents house at age 15 and seeking a career in sales - particularly in life insurance, and achieving great success in this, rising to the rank of a general manager at one of the premier life insurance firms in Pakistan.
He was an extremely intelligent man, having mastered the languages of English, 2 dialects of Pashto, Urdu, Farsi, and Punjabi. In fact, he would exclusively speak to me in English - and he didn't even have an accent in it despite having been raised in Pakistan.
He was also very meticulous about dressing well. He loved to wear dress shirts and cufflinks and suits. He was the one who would tie my tie for me, for all the events in my life that required formal attire e.g. my graduations and so on.
He also was a huge fan of taking walks outside. He would walk everywhere. People in the community got to know him by his many walks. I am so sad that I will never see that walk again.
As a young child in Pakistan, he was there with me. I used to actually go on the bus home from preschool to his house instead of my parents', much to the worry of my parents! And then when I moved to Canada at age 5, my parents would take videos of my brother and I as children where we addressed him and my grandma, and send them to my grandparents. Eventually they immigrated to Canada themselves, and I was so excited. In the beginning they lived independently in a house nearby where I lived. I remember going to their place often for lunch during middle school.
Later on, they moved in to my parents' home in the upper story. And that's where my grandpa lived for over the past decade with my grandma. I got to know him during this time at a very close level.
My grandpa loved to watch cricket and tennis, and even partook in watching basketball from time to time. He was a giant fan of cricket in particular, and was an avid viewer of the last world cup knowing all the players and stats.
He also loved the rain and snow like me. He said they were his favourite weather. It is a wonderful thing that the day before he died, it snowed outside.
The greatest thing he taught me was to keep your spirituality private...to pray in secret, and to worship in secret, and keep your relationship with God a special and sacred thing. He was against all forms of ostentation and showing off, and lived a humble yet very impactful life.
I had a conversation with him in the hours before his passing. I told him that I will always remember his teachings of tolerance for others and charity, and teach them to my own grandchildren. It nearly broke my heart in two just trying to say those things.
I will remember the memories I had with him forever.

My relation with sahibzada sahib is continuation of a very respectfull and close relationship between sahibzada sahib and my father Ch. Nasir Ahmad (late). He was a very humble and loving personality. He had lot of respect and love for jamaat and office bearer of jamaat. I was too young and younger to to sahibzada sahib .but he always give me too much respect just as I was meeting him as representative of Khuddamul ahmadiyya. Later on I had the honour to have very close relationship with him till he left Pakistan. His one of supreme achievement is -- He succeded in transferring these qualities in his son Khalid Latif. MAY ALLAH REST HIS SOUL IN PEACE. May Allah grant saber jameel to all family members.
